![]() ![]() It aims to demonstrate that how language subordinates is more complex than has been described by most philosophers writing on this topic. ![]() This dissertation aims to deepen and broaden the philosophical literature on subordinating speech. Also, argumentation and denial strategies were interpreted concluding that Donald Trump employed negative attributes to immigrants to justify the building of a wall and his election as president, denying that he is a racist and presenting himself as the savior of the U.S. The results showed that the construction of racism was articulated by linking different immigrant groups with negative evaluations, such as Syrians with terrorism, Mexican with rape and drugs and general immigrants as responsible for the economic and social problems of the U.S. Also, the interpretation of these strategies explained the underlying exercise of power that Critical Discourse Analysis has as an objective. For this purpose, this study focused on the analysis from four perspectives: Referential, predication and argumentation strategies approach proposed by Wodak and the discursive strategies of denial of racism, proposed by van Dijk. This study aimed to identify and interpret the discursive strategies to construct and deny racism. This study was conducted under the scope of Sociolinguistics and Critical Discourse Studies, which provided an approximation to the discursive strategies of self-representation and other-representation employed by Donald Trump through Twitter. This paper will be published in Daniel Fogal, Matt Cross and Daniel Harris’s New Work on Speech Acts (OUP). I will argue for this through a careful exploration of the under-investigated phenomenon of "dog whistles" or "code words". We need to move beyond just a focus on content, however it’s conveyed-and indeed beyond just the conscious effects of our language use. ![]() But it is my contention that this has not yet gone far enough. This is an exciting and important development. Instead, we see careful attention to the political implications of what is presupposed, or what is conversationally implicated and even some who focus on semantic content are exploring the politics of this content. In so doing, they have turned away from the thought that our primary concern should be with semantic content and truth conditions, or with how these are determined. FOR THE FINAL VERSION, AND IN ORDER CITE, PLEASE SEE Daniel Fogal, Daniel Harris and Matt Moss, _New Work on Speech Acts_ (Oxford University PrEss 2018.) In recent years, an increasing number of analytic philosophers have turned their attention to the very important and fascinating intersection of philosophy of language with politics. Philosophers of language convinced me that my use of 'implicit' and 'explicit' was confusing.) Note also that this was written before Trump's rise, though it has had terminological and other changes since that time. (Substantially changed from February 2016 version- sorry. Bend your elbows slightly and align your middle finger with your shoulders. All of the following will make you look more credible: The good news is that great alternatives exist. As Malcolm Kushner says in Presentations for Dummies, “it’s like you’ve just discovered your nakedness (or lack of anything intelligent to say) and want to hide it from your audience.” What Are Options to Figleaf? When we feel exposed (as many feel when presenting) we react by covering up. It can lower others’ perception of your credibility. Using “Figleaf”, even while sitting, closes you in and hunches you inward. What is Figleaf?įigleaf occurs when you place one or more hands in front of your midsection or abdomen. If we are serious about presenting effectively, we can’t afford any of these. I can only imagine how relieved my clients would be if I could promote these popular behaviors. After giving Figleaf a thumbs-up in this fantasy scenario, I could also wholeheartedly endorse the following, both online and IRL: Oh, if only I could advocate Figleaf, since it’s the go-to position of many presenters. ![]()
